 Live earthquake news from Morocco: Morocco's Interior Ministry reported that around 300 people perished after a strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the nation late on Friday night. The likelihood of more deaths is high. Al Jazeera said that the epicentre was located 72 kilometers west of Marrekesh, a significant commercial hub. Damage has also been done to the medieval city's red walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 


The US Geological Survey reports that the earthquake's initial magnitude was 6.8, and it struck at 11:11 p.m. The shaking persisted for several seconds. The earthquake was rated at 7 on the Richter scale by Morocco's National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network. 


A 4.9 magnitude aftershock, according to the US agency, struck the nation 19 minutes after the initial earthquake. The earthquake was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere and the Algerian Civil Defense Service.

Teacher Hamid Afkar told AFP that he had left his home and that there had been aftershocks after the initial earthquake near Taroudant.


"For around 20 seconds, the earth rocked. As I ran downstairs from the second story, doors opened and shut by themselves.
